Haus Wien
September 21 — 27, 2020

Open Call

Haus is pleased to announce the open call for its first edition which will be taking place in Vienna from September 21-27, 2020.

The open call is directed towards artists, curators, researchers, commercial galleries, and institutions, as well as non-profit, artist-run or self-organized initiatives.

Inspired by the spatial arrangement of an art fair that brings together different exhibitors under one roof, Haus is conceived as a hybrid between collaborative group exhibition and non-commercial showcase. By combining artistic, curatorial and discursive interventions, the project aims to create an experimental platform where a variety of exhibition strategies, structures and formats meet. The platform is envisioned as a tool to explore new ideas for showcasing artworks as well as accompanying formats.

With these goals in mind, Haus will launch its first edition in September 2020 as a pilot project where the platform itself becomes a way of forging new alliances, friendships and strategies of collaboration.

Criteria

Applicants are invited to submit a project proposal for a contribution to Haus. Submitted proposals should fall within the scope of contemporary art, demonstrating an original approach to exhibition-making. Proposals may include artistic projects of all media, single artworks, exhibition concepts, discursive formats, film, performance, publication and text, or other ephemeral or educational formats.

A jury will evaluate the submissions, taking into consideration their relevance for the ideas of Haus as well as the feasibility of the proposal, especially with an eye on potential limitations caused by the current situation surrounding COVID-19.
The jury consists of Kimberly Bradley (art critic), Cédric Fauq (curator), Aziza Harmel (curator), Francis Ruyter (artist) and, with a single additional vote, the founding board of Haus (Marie-Claire Gagnon, Fanny Hauser, Bruno Mokross, Julius Pristauz, Johanna Thorell, Edin Zenun).

All submitted proposals will be taken into careful consideration. Please note that there will be a limit to the number of participants.

Venue

The first edition of Haus will take place in a former residential property in the 11th district of Vienna (Simmering). Situated within a one minute walking distance from the Simmering public transport station, the one-story house is organized around a central courtyard which gives access to the former car repair shop, adjacent apartments as well as a backyard. The exhibition spaces will range from derelict living spaces (empty rooms, kitchen, bathroom etc) to garages of various sizes as well as the courtyard and the backyard. Applicants may indicate what kind of space they would prefer for their proposal.

Please note that some of the spaces are in a partially rough condition. Haus provides basic cleaning and the main infrastructure such as electricity and running water. Architectural interventions in the assigned spaces may be carried out according to the needs of individual proposals.

Further Information

  • Haus does not want to perpetuate financial hurdles: both the application process and the participation in the project are free of charge. Please note, however, that the project is operating on a small budget. Commercial galleries or similar enterprises as well as funded exhibition spaces or institutions are therefore encouraged to financially support Haus through a small donation, as indicated in the application form.

  • Our team will reach out to all selected participants in order to collaboratively figure out not only the organisational details regarding setup, logistics and progression of the project, but also the best possible way for realizing and mediating individual projects in the frame of Haus in its entirety.

  • Haus will gladly provide letters of support or similar documents for confirmed participants to assist their applications for external grants covering travel, accommodation, production or other expenses.
